Memoirs of a Geisha
Film Synopsis
The Memoirs of a Geisha takes place in 1920s Japan, and tells the story of a girl named Chiyo, who’s mother becomes ill and her and her sister are sold off and separated. Chiyo, the main character, is sold to a geisha house but is banned from becoming a geisha after breaking the house mothers rules. Eventually, a mother from another house comes and makes a deal with her own house mother to train her in the geisha ways. After becoming a geisha her names changes from Chiyo to Sayuri and she faces the challenge of becoming the best geisha, in order to make the most money and connections and uphold the deal. Then WWII takes over and disrupts everything she has worked for, throwing her whole world for a loop.
Creative Brief
Inspired by 1920’s Japanese poster designs and the film “Memoirs of a Geisha”. The poster and additional artifacts incorporate newspaper articles from WWII to reference the film as well as graphics such as a cherry blossom tree, Sayuri performing a geisha dance, and the outline of an umbrella.
